Hiking Elopement Big Sur
A cross-country train ride to California, a drive down the coast, and finally a hike through a hidden canyon. These are what brought Cara and Seth to their intimate elopement ceremony under the redwoods. This couple had dreamed of visiting the Monterey Bay ever since reading Steinbeck novels when they were younger. Together, we collaborated on a plan to shape their Big Sur elopement into something adventurous and inspiring.
Cara and Seth drank in the views as we made our way up to a trailhead. I always love when a couple’s wedding ceremony follows an inspiring and beautiful journey getting there. The couple and their two family members marched up the trail and over creeks until we reached the shade of the hidden redwoods. “Choose any place you like for your ceremony” I reminded them as we walked on the trail parallel to a babbling creek. We found the perfect spot with the relaxing sound of the creek.
After a moving and tear-filled ceremony, I followed Cara and Seth back out of the woods on their first official hike as a married couple. I loved hearing Seth joke throughout the day about how each thing they did was their first as a married couple… “first bear hug as a married couple!”
Lastly, the five of us descended down through a trail of Calla lilies to reach the beach. The weather was warm and the air was mercifully calm. Cara and Seth explored the shore and then took their first dance as husband and wife on the sand.
How I Approach Elopements
All day long, I documented this couple inside naturally unfolding moments. We took a little time for portraits here and there, but kept the focus on their uninterrupted adventure experience. I love to take this hands-off approach so that a couple’s wedding day does not get turned into a photo shoot.
